Stowen: Building skills and capability for offshore wind transition

Originally focused on delivering services to the oil and gas sector, the company has evolved with the advent of offshore wind to be a key supplier to the clean power industry.

Its £7m+ contract with ScottishPower Renewables' East Anglia offshore wind projects is now supporting more than 20 Stowen technicians deployed right across our East Anglia projects. As their flagship customer, Stowen delivers project management, inspection and maintenance, workforce training, offshore planned maintenance, fabrication, labour provision and HSE support to ScottishPower Renewables’ East Anglia THREE windfarm and is due to commence supporting the construction of East Anglia TWO windfarm from 2027. Stowen also currently delivers inspection services to ScottishPower Renewables East Anglia ONE windfarm.

The partnership has enabled Stowen to recruit six new people dedicated to ScottishPower projects, while continuing to expand its technician workforce. It now employs 120 field technicians supporting projects right across the UK and Europe. A true UK success story.

And its growth enables it to invest in its existing and new workforce too. Through its dedicated training division, Hexis, Stowen delivers Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and ECITB-accredited training programmes, helping create highly skilled technicians for the wider offshore wind sector. Delivering apprenticeships, supporting ex-forces personnel and experienced oil and gas workers to retrain as well as delivering skills and experience for trainees from the local East Coast College.Since starting to work with ScottishPower in 2021, the business has been able to invest in specialist technical capabilities, including statutory inspections, non-destructive testing, rope access, fabrication, crane services, and digital inspection reporting. Its experience has now established Stowen as a trusted delivery partner across complex offshore wind projects.
