Recognised in UK’s top 50 Veteran employers

25/06/2026

Our company have charged into the top 50 GREAT British Employers of Veterans for 2026 in recognition of our long-standing support for the armed forces.

The accolade – the definitive benchmark of Forces Friendly employment in the UK – is based on genuine, measurable and enduring commitment to the armed forces community, across recruitment, development, progression and retention.

Awarded ahead of Armed Forces Day 2026, it’s testament to our long-standing commitment to supporting ex-forces personnel into new civilian careers.

Our company is a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant and holds a prestigious Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award – the highest badge of honour available to civilian organisations.

We have also launched a dedicated veterans’ recruitment programme – EMPower – to help ex-military personnel transition into the energy sector. The 12-month programme provides tailored retraining to help ex-servicemen and women move into permanent, skilled roles within the renewable energy and electricity network industries.

Sarah McNulty, People Director at ScottishPower, said: “We’re proud to be a Forces Friendly business, working with the armed forces community to offer the support, development opportunities and employment pathways that can make a real and lasting difference – whether for those currently serving as cadet or reservists, or those looking for their next chapter after service.

“We know the technical skills, experience, resilience and leadership that come from military service. These are exactly the kind of transferable skills we want to harness and put to work as we grow our workforce, bring more clean power to life and build the grid for the future. It’s all about how we welcome, support and empower our military talent to play their part in a cleaner, greener and better future”

Ben Rossi, founder of the global Forces in Business Awards series and 50 GREAT British Employers of Veterans programme, said: "Veteran employment has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. Increasing numbers of employers now recognise that creating dedicated career pathways for the military community is not an act of charity – it is a source of talent and competitive advantage that can strengthen businesses at every level.”

We have seen that for ourselves, with many ex-military personnel forging successful careers within the business.

Jack Brooke from Lowestoft is an Engineering Systems Lead with ScottishPower Renewables. Jack served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers for seven years before joining the company in 2019 in his first role as a professional engineer. He said: “Transitioning from the military to the offshore renewable energy sector is a natural and highly rewarding career path. A forces background provides the exact skill set needed to thrive in this demanding, fast-paced industry and I’ve been lucky enough to do exactly that at ScottishPower. From a rigorous safety-first culture to operating in unpredictable, high-stakes conditions where you have to show resilience and adaptability, I definitely put my military background to use every day – and that’s helped both me and the business succeed.”

Barry McIntosh from Edinburgh is an EMPower Trainee with SP Energy Networks. Barry spent 24 years in the army, serving with the Royal Regiment of Scotland. He wasn’t sure what the next chapter would bring – and then he heard about EMPower. He said: “It was daunting to leave the army after so long and although I knew it was time for a change, I wasn’t sure what path to follow. EMPower came along and it’s definitely giving me a second career and one full of possibility and opportunity. The programme gives you the time and the training to succeed and make the most of the management skills, flexibility, discipline and communication that are part of everyday life in the military. I’m really enjoying it – in fact, you could say I’m buzzing about it!”
