ScottishPower Launches 'In Home' Pay As You Go Service

30/09/2009

In partnership with one of its Pay As You Go technology providers, ScottishPower has designed an innovative new application that will, for the first time in Great Britain, allow prepayment customers the convenience of topping-up the credit in their meters from home, via the internet. The service allows customers to top up their meter credit directly from a secure internet page on ScottishPower’s website using a new plug-in device called a PowerPod.

The unique service and plug-in device will be available to all existing prepayment customers and also to any new customers. Customers who currently have a credit meter in their homes can still apply for a PowerPod and will have a new Pay As You Go Key meter installed in their homes as part of the service.

The development of the innovative technology has been made possible by the recent completion of ScottishPower’s £50 million project to replace 340,000 ‘Token’ prepayment meters with new, smarter, ‘Key’ meters across its entire network area. The company was the first supplier in Great Britain to upgrade all the meters in their network area.

Neil Clitheroe, Customer Services Director at ScottishPower, said: “Our recent £50m investment to upgrade prepayment meters means that we are able to launch this new technology, which offers a quick and convenient method of managing your energy account. The average prepayment customer tops-up credit at least once a week and, from our research, we know that a lot of journeys out of the home are made purely for the purposes of buying energy. Our new service is an additional payment method that will allow customers to manage their account in their own time, at their own convenience.

“ScottishPower has always taken an innovative approach to product development and continually strive to make managing their energy easier for our customers. We were the first company to introduce a combined Gas and Electricity Bill, have the No.1 online service and led the market on capped price Gas & Electricity offers, which have since benefited millions of customers across the country. Now we are delighted to be making things easier for our Pay As You Go customers, saving them the hassle and inconvenience of having to leave their home to pay for their electricity costs.”

The service will be available in early October 2009. In advance of this date ScottishPower is encouraging interested customers to pre-register to be among the first people in Great Britain to benefit from this service. A dedicated pre-registration website has been launched www.scottishpower.co.uk/PAYG. Alternatively customers can call 0845 270 3333 to find out more and register over the phone.

Notes to Editors:

  • ScottishPower remains the only GB energy company to set prices for prepayment customers below standard cash prices.
