Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship Programme

The Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship Programme is available to young people aged 16–19, providing a great foundation and valuable first step into the challenging and rewarding engineering industry equipping them with the knowledge and relevant experience to enhance their skill set and employability.

“At school I had some friends who were electrical installers and they said it was a great job, and everything they were doing was what I wanted to do. I’d planned to stay on for a sixth year but then I saw a college course for a Pre-Apprenticeship Programme with ScottishPower and went for that instead. After that I went on to the Craft Apprenticeship Programme. Now I’m training to be an overhead linesman.”.

The programme combines on-site technical skills training and academic study at a local college in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Ellesmere Port. All the training provided as part of the programme will last for nine months (September - June) as you work towards nationally recognised qualifications.

If you’re considering applying you should have an interest in electrical engineering, be highly motivated with a positive attitude and have a willingness to learn in addition;

  • In Scotland – Two National 5s or equivalent in Maths, English and/or a STEM related subject (we will also consider National 4 awards or equivalent).
  • In England & Wales – Two GCSE’s at Grade A–C / 4-9 from Maths, English and/or a STEM related subject.

The Engineering Pre-Apprenticeship Programme is sponsored by ScottishPower; it is not a permanent role. You will receive a monthly £275 allowance as a contribution towards your travel to a local college.
