Programme Overview

Our Graduate Apprenticeship Programme offers a unique opportunity to work across different operational sites and teams, giving you hands-on experience in everything from network planning and asset management to fault response and customer service, whilst studying towards your degree on a part-time basis.

As a Graduate Apprentice in Engineering, you’ll be immersed in a hands-on and academic journey to develop into a fully qualified engineer. You’ll contribute directly to planning, constructing, maintaining, and innovating SPEN’s distribution networks.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Gain practical, hands-on experience in both field-based and office-based roles, supporting engineering teams in maintaining, upgrading, and responding to faults in critical infrastructure

  • Assist in the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of substations, overhead lines, and underground cable systems.

  • Work alongside engineers and craftspersons on site deployment, network upgrades, and fault resolution.

  • Contribute to innovative projects aimed at improving network efficiency, reliability, and decarbonisation efforts.

  • Collaborate safely in both office and field environments as part of a supportive, innovative team culture that values continuous improvement

Learning & Development

  • Combine on-the-job learning and part-time formal study at university.

  • Earn a degree - BEng (Hons) across 4 years.

  • Receive mentoring support and structured development aligned with career milestones.

Where you’ll be working

You’ll be based in one of our operational regions across Central and Southern Scotland - with a mix of time spent in the office and out on-site. This blend gives you the chance to see how our network works in the real world, connect with different teams, and gain hands-on experience that goes beyond the desk.
