Discount plan encourages people to use energy at its cheapest and greenest times

Leading renewable energy firm ScottishPower today (Tuesday, 13th May) revealed its customers have shaved a huge £2million from their energy bills since it launched its ‘half price electricity at weekends’ initiative less than six months ago.

Over 275,000 smart meter customers have already signed up to the offer since it went live in November and continue to benefit from financial savings every weekend.

The launch of the Half Price Weekends initiative followed a successful six-week trial that showed customers could save up to £300 per annum depending on how they used their energy.

ScottishPower is currently the only energy supplier in the UK to offer its customers the discounted rate over both weekend days, with the discounted rate available to its smart meter customers every Saturday and Sunday between 11am and 4pm.

Andrew Ward, Chief Executive of ScottishPower’s Customer Business, said: “We know our customers are savvy when it comes to reducing their energy use and are always keen to take advantage of initiatives that can help reduce their bills.

“Through half-price weekends we’ve seen significant savings made, now over the two million pounds mark in just six months, and the savings are ongoing. This success of this initiative has not just helped our customers’ pockets, it is also raising awareness of the benefits of using less energy at peak times and encourage shifting usage to other periods of the day.

“By working together with our customers, we can ease pressure on the energy network, meaning that the need for energy from fossil fuel sources can be lessened. This in turn benefits our customer’s pockets and benefits the environment too.”
