Graduate Programme Requirements - SP Energy Networks

SP Energy Networks provide power on behalf of supply companies through a network of cables and power lines that we own and maintain. SP Energy Networks is a regulated business focused on delivering industry changing projects.

During the next 10 years, we will invest a further £7bn to modernise the network and achieve even greater efficiency. We have 30,000 substations, more than 40,000km of overhead lines and 65,000km of underground cables. Your placements will allow you to build your knowledge of how our network operates, the assets we manage and maintain and how we deliver electricity to the network safely 24 hours a day 365 days a year.



As part of your programme you will rotate through either three or four different departments to gain an understanding of wider business and how it operates. The departments may include:

  • Distribution, Transmission, Network Planning & Regulation, Engineering Services

Our engineering schemes are accredited by various professional bodies, such as IET and IMechE.

This role requires a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.

Quantity Surveying

Quantity Surveying

Working in a fast moving, dynamic team supporting the whole of the SPD Energy Networks business, you will be involved in all areas of surveying across the UK ensuring a high degree of commerciality is driven throughout the business.

With over 10000 live projects ranging from £100 to £15m you will be involved in assuring the profitability of these projects, comparing performance against our Regulatory allowances, dealing with subcontractors, completing CVR’s etc. using the range of surveying techniques developed during your university course. Over a period of time it is anticipated you would be fully responsible for your own District and ultimately all the commercial aspects within that area.

Posts will be based within Central & Southern Scotland and North West England however there will be a requirement at times to travel across our District offices in order to carry out your duties.

This role requires a Quantity Surveying specific related degree.

 We are a fast moving, multi-channelled, customer focused business that operates 24/7, 365 days a year. Based over 5 sites, we act as the initial point of contact for our 3.5m customers and ensure that we are there to support them, whenever we are needed.

As part of this role, you will complete a planned development schedule that covers all aspects of the business. This will include, amongst other things:

  • Working in our UK based Contact Centres to manage, review and identify continuous improvement within our multi-channelled inbound/outbound contacts strategies.
  • Working with our Complaints Teams to maximise customer satisfaction and deliver industry leading levels of performance.
  • Working within the Business Improvement Team to identify ways of improving our customer experience and exceeding expectations. This will require you to lead, define and implement projects to completion.
  • Look at developing skills in data management and delivering business wide M.I. reporting requirements, utilising tools such as Excel, Access, Business Objects and SQL.
  • All aspects of team, quality and process management.

This will require both formal and on the job training.  It is important to have self-motivation and be customer focused, to learn and become familiar with all of the various elements.

Initially based at Kirkintilloch, but moving to the new Head Quarters building in Glasgow. There will be the need to travel to various sites and interface with the wider Iberdrola team.

This role requires individuals with a Business degree.

Regulation & Asset Management

This is an exciting time to become part of our dynamic team where we will develop your financial and commercial awareness and you will have direct involvement in making a difference to achieve business goals and regulatory targets across our Network Planning and Regulation department.  You will assist with development of strategy to optimise the position of the licensed businesses in respect of all aspects of financial/economic regulation.

This role requires individuals with a Finance / Accountancy / Economics / Physics / Mathematics degree.

At SP Energy Networks we are dedicated to delivering a safe and reliable electricity supply of all our customers 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Our Control Systems, at the heart of our distribution and transmission networks, are critical in achieving these goals. We must ensure they maintain a very high degree of availability to support our business operations, and that the sensitive information and control of our network remains secure against any threat.

You will join an established team gaining knowledge in our control systems and applications, and work to support the current expansion of the system. This will enable the business to meet ever increasing data requirements in a real time system that supports business functions 24/7. You will work to ensure that SP Energy Networks is able to take advantage of advances in new technologies whilst all the while ensuring support for legacy infrastructure, within the latest CPNI standards.

You will be responsible for your own projects but will be developed across the different systems that we use.  This will require training both formal and on the job.  It is important to have self-motivation to learn and become familiar and then expert on the different systems.

Initially based at Ochil House, Blantyre or Prenton, Merseyside there will be travel requirements and interface to the wider Iberdrola team.

This role requires individuals with a Computer & Electronic Systems or Computer Science degree.
