Our Business

ScottishPower is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and world leader in wind energy. Our focus is on wind energy, smart grids and driving the change to a cleaner, electric future. We’re proud to say we produce 100% green electricity and are well on our way to our ultimate journey to Net Zero.

We're investing over £1.4billion in the UK - every year - for the next 5 years. Working on cutting edge innovation projects, we’re creating a smarter, cleaner and more efficient network, as well as and building and maintaining windfarms, as we work towards Net Zero.  And with contributions of £40m to charitable causes during the last 5 years, we’re investing in our communities as well to create a better future, quicker, for everyone.

SP Energy Networks

Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.

Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.

Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century; and you can be part of it.

Why choose SP Energy Networks?

There’s never been a more exciting time to join us, and we need great people like you to help us succeed on our journey to Net Zero! During your time on the graduate programme, you’ll face new challenges and experience a diverse range of opportunities. You might be working in different areas of the business or focusing on your chosen specialism. Either way, you’ll be creating a network of colleagues and fellow graduates that’ll support your growth and development throughout your career. Your programme is tailored to you and your personal development and will include a combination of behavioural and technical modules and placements. Our programme is designed to bring out the best in you, helping you find the career path that’s right for you.

As a graduate trainee and part of ScottishPower, you’ll have a range of benefits as well as a varied and interesting career path, including:

  • Starting Salary of £28,400

  • A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%

  • A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity matched funding and many, many more

What opportunities do we have on offer for you?

Digital technology and data are at the heart of our plans to modernise our energy system – safely, securely and sustainably in the communities we serve. Evolution of the Distribution System Operator (DSO) model will bring a more active and dynamic network as both consumers and generators interact more with the electricity system. And with new economic, commercial and flexible solutions, the DSO model will help us to deliver our customers’ and stakeholders’ needs.

To develop a flexible and truly smart grid, we are rolling-out a new data, digital and communications ecosystem that will enable coordinated planning and delivery of these Whole System solutions. We are on a journey to transform our organisation into a modern, digitalised energy network operator. We will manage vast increases in the volume and frequency of data collected from technologies such as remote sensors, Internet of Things (IoT) devices, wearable technology and drones, and generate evidence bases and automated solutions that ensure optimised decision making.

With so much opportunity, we have a number of diverse teams where you can build your knowledge and skills:

Centre of Excellence

In the Centre of Excellence (COE), we’re at the forefront of the drive to develop innovative solutions for our business processes and supporting IT systems. You’ll be instrumental in challenging our current processes and systems to enable our business to deliver smarter and cleaner technology. You’ll play an essential role in developing our existing systems or even delivering new systems, which through digitalisation and forecasting, will enable decision making and create efficiencies across SP Energy Networks. You’ll be helping to predict the load on the network and reduce faults, ensuring that the electricity continues to flow throughout our network.

Smart Grid Operations (SGO)

The home of our operational technology (OT), we’re driving the new digital and data revolution of our energy system. As we focus our efforts on achieving Net Zero, our Smart Grid is key to realising this ambition. Bringing a new era of reliability, availability and efficiency that will contribute to our economic and environmental health, the Smart Grid facilitates two-way communication which allows us to respond digitally to rapid changes in demand or faults on our network, minimising the impact on our customers, communities and stakeholders.

Working within our SGO team, you’ll interface across the different teams within SGO who support our real time systems, a private telecommunications network, electricity network automation, smart metering systems and Cyber Security to deliver projects to enhance the functionality provided whilst also ensuring the 24/7 availability of our systems.

SGO - Real Time Systems

Our Real Time Systems (RTS) combine SCADA information sourced directly from the electricity network with customer calls and smart metering information. Creating a digital twin of the electricity network, we maintain a model for visualisation and control purposes. The scope and complexity of these systems are continuously evolving to improve customer service and manage the smart grid that is emerging to accommodate renewable electricity in the drive to Net Zero.

You’ll play an essential role in delivering projects that will optimise the performance of our systems. And with customers at the heart of what we do, you’ll be responsible for providing expert support to our Control Centre to minimise the impact of faults, maintenance and new installations on our communities. You’ll build your knowledge of Linux and Microsoft operating systems, as well as your understanding of relational databases, graphical editing tools and computer networking as you immerse yourself in our digital world.

SGO - Telecoms

Within the Telecoms Team in SGO, we’re responsible for providing and managing the telecoms infrastructure that makes our smart grid so smart. We know as soon as faults develop and can take immediate action. And we can see how substations are running to optimise efficiency. We’re embracing this new technological evolution.

As a Telecoms graduate, you’ll be involved in providing the telecoms infrastructure that allows us to monitor and control the network, ensuring that the electricity continues to flow throughout our network. And with access to a variety of technologies such as satellite communications, cables, fibre communications and point to point or multi point radios, your telecoms knowledge will grow exponentially. You’ll have the opportunity to design and deliver large scale projects, providing you with in depth knowledge of all our communications technology. We’re constantly creating innovative solutions to everyday problems and, right now, we’re trialling a private 4G network that will allow us to connect to remote substations or those where terrain prevents connection, so our Smart Grid knows no bounds. We constantly challenge ourselves to unleash the power of technology and we hope you will too!

You’ll find information on all our current and future projects on our web page:
