“Once I’ve got my qualifications there are so many different things I can do in ScottishPower. I’d be quite happy to be a cable jointer all the time – it’s a great job - but there are other opportunities there if you want them.”
Marc – Adult Craft Trainee Programme
ScottishPower is part of the Iberdrola Group, one of the world’s largest integrated utility companies and world leader in wind energy. Our focus is on wind energy, smart grids and driving the change to a cleaner, electric future. We’re proud to say we produce 100% green electricity and are well on our way to our ultimate journey to Net Zero.
We're investing over £1.4 billion in the UK - every year - for the next 5 years. Working on cutting edge innovation projects, we’re creating a smarter, cleaner and more efficient network, as well as building and maintaining windfarms, as we work towards Net Zero. And, with contributions of £40m to charitable causes during the last 5 years, we’re investing in our communities as well to create a better future, quicker, for everyone.
SP Energy Networks
Our energy landscape is going through a time of profound change. A challenge touching every part of our society, we need to eradicate carbon emissions to halt the effects of climate change. We need to change how we live our lives and replace the use of fossil fuels for transport and heat.
Electricity will be at the heart of the solution, through electric vehicles and heat pumps. And with more renewables generation and other technologies connected to the electricity grid than ever before, it’s our role to make sure we create a more efficient, cleaner, greener network to accommodate this increase in demand.
Within SP Energy Networks, we are focusing on harnessing technology and innovation to create the networks of the future. With distribution networks designed for predictable, stable demand, it’s vital we upgrade our network to create the flexibility required to cope with the extensive changes to electricity demand, generation, and consumer behaviour. Through technology and innovation, we will enable a consumer-led revolution in the use and operation of our system. It will undergo the biggest changes to its design and operation for over half a century; and you can be part of it.
We know people are central to building a better future, quicker, and we need talented, hardworking and flexible people to join us.
What do we offer?
Our trainee programme builds on your existing skills from other industries combining technical, academic and on the job training. Bringing learning and earning together, not only will you study towards a nationally recognised qualification, you’ll earn a competitive salary, develop new skills and gain invaluable knowledge and experience.
Whether you want to develop your existing skills to enhance your chosen career, or you’d like to re-train and do something different, our programme delivers excellent training opportunities, varied career paths and secure employment.
As a ScottishPower Adult Craft Trainee, you’ll enjoy a range of benefits including:
- Starting salary of £21,591
- A generous pension scheme where we’ll double match your contributions up to 10%;
- A broad range of flexible benefits including share incentive plans, employee discounts, charity matched funding and many, many more.
- On completion of your programme, you’ll continue your career as a Craftsperson with a starting salary of £25,767.
We’d also like you to know that we’re a Gold Award holder of the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. So, if you’re currently a member of the Volunteer Reserve Forces, you’ll be supported with additional paid leave for your annual training camp. And if you’re mobilised, you’ll continue to be employed during your deployment.
What will you be doing?
With commitments to achieve Net Zero as early as 2030, it’s crucial that we facilitate significant increases in Electric Vehicle (EV), heat pump and renewable generation connections to support the decarbonisation of heat and transport. To do this, we urgently need Cable Jointers to join our business. You’ll find more information on our trades, including Cable Jointing, here.
Upon completion of the Adult Craft Trainee Programme, you’ll become a qualified Craftsperson in Cable Jointing. Achieving either:
Next year we’re offering two programme streams; a two-year programme and a three-year programme. For both programmes you’ll be out working in one of our districts building your experience within your first 6 months.
Our two-year programme will put you on the fast track to becoming a Cable Jointer. You’ll power through your qualification and be out working as a Craftsperson in one of our districts on both High Voltage (HV) and Low Voltage (LV) connections within two years.
On our three-year programme, you will work through three stages where you’ll spend time benefiting from on-the-job experience. You’ll still achieve the same qualification, but you’ll also spend invaluable time in the field gaining practical experience, particularly in LV jointing. Initially, you’ll be gaining experience in a Craft Assistant role working in one of our districts, learning from your skilled colleagues before quickly moving on to do your LV jointing training. In your final stage, you’ll undertake HV jointing training, and you’ll gain the experience needed to progress into a Craftsperson role.
We have multiple start dates between April and June, with opportunities across our operating area in Central and Southern Scotland, Merseyside, Wirral, Cheshire, Mid and North Wales. You’ll find more information on our network and operating area on SP Energy Networks website but, for ease, here’s a summary of our districts:
|Central & Southern Scotland||North West England & Mid / North Wales|
|Glasgow & Clyde North||Merseyside|
|Edinburgh & Borders||Wirral|
|Central & Fife||Mid Cheshire|
|Ayrshire & Clyde South||Dee Valley & Mid Wales|
|Dumfries & Stranraer|| |
Who are we looking for?
YOU! We want you. We want people with talent and ambition, a desire to learn, who embrace innovative ideas and challenge others to think differently. Above all, you must share our passion for excellence to deliver for our customers; and you must be excited to help us generate the change needed to deliver a better future, quicker. Because nothing matters more.
You’ll have experience working within an engineering environment (or similar) where health and safety is paramount. You’ll also need a driving licence as you’ll need to get to different sites both during and after your training period. And, as a Cable Jointer, you’ll need to be comfortable working within confined spaces. If you already have experience as a Cable Jointer, we may be able to reduce the training period accordingly.
We are no longer accepting applications for our 2022 programme. You can register your interest here to receive updates about future recruitment.
