Local Glasgow school one step closer to ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship glory

04/03/2016

Shawlands Academy from Glasgow produced a stunning performance at Scotstoun stadium in the quarter-final of the ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship to progress to the semi-final stages of the tournament.

The three Shawlands Academy rugby teams from S1, S2 and an under-15 girls team showed sublime skill against St. Maurice’s, Garnock Academy and Oban High School, winning all their matches in the process.

The school can now look forward to their semi-final ties against the winner of the second quarter-final between Grange Academy, Lenzie Academy, All Saints Secondary and Hyndland Secondary.

If successful in the semi-finals which will take place in April, Shawlands can challenge for a spot in the finals of the tournament to be played at Scotstoun Stadium, home of the Glasgow Warriors, in May. The champions of the tournament will win new rugby kits for their school, as well as the first ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championships trophy. The school which comes second place can also look forward to a coaching session with one member of the Glasgow Warriors squad.

Glasgow Warriors stars Adam Ashe, Zander Fagerson, Duncan Weir and Scotland Women Internationals Megan Gaffney and Jade Konkel attended the quarter final match at Scotstoun to cheer on the schools and give pupils some inspirational advice as they took to the pitch.

Adam Ashe said, “It was fantastic to be a part of the quarter-finals today and help give the schools a few words of advice before their big matches. The players worked so hard and there were very impressive skill levels on show. I think there’s potential for Shawlands Academy to produce some future stars and they should be really proud of making it through to the next round of the championships.”

Robbie Renwick, Shawlands Academy rugby coach said: “What a great day of rugby which provided our pupils with a fantastic experience at the home of the Glasgow Warriors. There was a high level of skill, commitment and natural talent on show today at the ScottishPower Warriors Rugby Championship quarter-final which was great to see. We’re delighted to progress to the semi-final stage of the tournament and look forward to learning our opponents.”
