ScottishPower, together with its customers, suppliers and employees, has raised over £30 million in their eight-year support of Cancer Research UK
This October, ScottishPower is celebrating raising over £30 million for Cancer Research UK, the world’s leading cancer charity dedicated to saving lives through research, since their partnership began in 2012.
An initial target of raising £5 million over three years was set and subsequently smashed in just two years.
Now, eight years on, the £30 million milestone has been reached thanks to a combination of support from the energy company itself, through sponsorship of Race for Life and Stand Up To Cancer, as well as their customers, employees and suppliers alike.
Keith Anderson, ScottishPower’s CEO, said: “At ScottishPower, we want to use our power to make things better, that’s why we have been working with Cancer Research UK since 2012 to support the charity’s vision of bringing forward the day when all cancers are cured.
“In a year where so much has changed, we are incredibly grateful that, together with our customers, suppliers and our employees, we have been able to continue to raise vital funds to support Cancer Research UK, and I would like to say thank you to everyone who has made reaching this milestone possible.
“It’s incredible to think of what our funds have helped achieve, but our support doesn’t end here, we are going to continue to do everything we can to help Cancer Research UK as they continue their world-class research to beat cancer.”
Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, said: “ScottishPower has shown absolute dedication to Cancer Research UK over the last eight years and we want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the partnership and made reaching this incredible £30m milestone possible.
“Our mission to beat cancer has never been more urgent. The last six months have been incredibly difficult for us, and as a result of COVID-19 we’ve seen a devastating impact on our fundraising. But we won’t stop working towards making progress for people affected by cancer, who have never needed us more. The money raised through our partnership with ScottishPower will help us continue our vital work.”
For every month a customer is on ScottishPower’s Help Beat Cancer Tariff the company makes a charitable donation to Cancer Research UK. With over 375,000 customers on the tariff, and counting, ScottishPower’s customers have helped raise £26 million to support the charity’s vital work.
Over 6,500 ScottishPower employees have donned their trainers to take part in Race for Life and over 5,000 volunteer hours have been donated in support of the charity since the partnership began.
Teams across the company have raised over £1.5m directly from their fundraising efforts including bake sales, bikeathons and even now, during the pandemic, people have been getting creative with at home fundraising challenges including Race for Life at Home.
The company’s suppliers have also shown their support by helping and attending various fundraising events throughout the year, including a Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) dinner.
ScottishPower’s support of Cancer Research UK is now working towards its next fundraising milestone, kicking off with their sponsorship of Celebrity Gogglebox for SU2C later this month on Channel 4.
