ScottishPower Sponsors STUC Centenary Play

27 October 1997

ScottishPower is to sponsor a specially commissioned school play as part of the Scottish Trade Union Congres centenary celebrations. The play, entitled "Worksong", uses music, songs and comedy to provide an account of the past 100 years of trade unionism and the TAG Theatre Company will tour Scottish secondary schools with it later this year.

TAG, Scotland's leading theatre company for young people, commisioned well known writer/director John McGrath to write a play on the importance of the trade union movement. With a blend of satire and realism, the play helps examine the changing roles of the trade union movement in people's lives.

"Worksong" will involve the audience in the play by creating situations based on these themes and issues and the young people will be put in the role of trade unionists and invited to make decisions in response to the piece. This interactive approach to theatre provides an opportunity for the audience to experience the individual and collective responsibilities of making decisions.

ScottishPower is supporting the TAG Theatre Company and "Worksong" in line with its commitment to positive participation among local communities. As a major British company ScottishPower forms an essential part of Scottish industrial life, as does the STUC, and the sponsorship of this play and the schools tour provides an excellent opportunity to deepen young people's understanding of social issues that have helped shape the last 100 years.

"Worksong" will tour secondary schools in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the central belt of Scotland in October and November.
