Scottish Power's Multi - Utility Infrastructure At Hyundai Opened
17 October 1997
The infrastructure for ScottishPower to supply Hyundai's Dunfermline plant with gas, electricity, telecomms and cable was formerly inaugurated on Friday 17 October by the Chancellor of Exchequer, Gordon Brown.
Mr Brown, who is also the local MP, was accompanied by ScottishPower Chief Executive Ian Robinson who explained that the new connections would also form part of a wider, upgraded utility network to help in the economic regeneration of Fife.
The prestigious Hyundai contracts are the latest in a string of utility deals concluded with some of the biggest hi-tech companies to have been attracted to Scotland. Others include Motorola, Chunghwa, NEC, IBM, and - in South Wales - LG (Lucky Goldstar).
For more than a year a team of senior managers worked closely with Hyundai to explain and demonstrate ScottishPower's multi-utilty approach to supplying all the customer's energy needs in one flexible "Turnkey" package.
ScottishPower Chief Executive Ian Robinson said:
"We specialise in becoming involved with major inward investments projects at the earliest possible stage and the Hyundai contract provides a good example of the competitive edge these close contacts give us.
"Our track record in anticipating the requirements of the electronics industry, one of the most technically sensitive and demanding markets, also helps attract the kind of investment that is vital to Fife and Scotland as a whole," Mr Robinson added.
ScottishPower used the occasion to announce that more than a year of close co-operation with the Korean company has paid off with a £25m electricity supply contract for the semi-conductor plant, Scotland's biggest single inward investment.
The Glasgow-based multi-utilty will meet the plant's electricity needs over three years. In addition, more than £3m worth of electrical engineering work will also be carried out on the Hyundai premises in a further contract won by ScottishPower's Electrical Contracting business.
