Prince Edward Launches New Outward Bound Video Supported By ScottishPower

5 August 1998

HRH Prince Edward will be visiting Glasgow on Wednesday (5 August) to launch a new ScottishPower-funded video promoting the Outward Bound Trust.

The video, "Expeditions that last a Lifetime", was made by Prince Edwards's company Ardent Productions and has won a major European award. It features the exploits of young people from throughout the UK on two Outward Bound courses in the Scottish Highlands.

The video was supported by a £30,000 grant from ScottishPower. As a major patron of Outward Bound, the company also donates £10,000 each year to enable disadvantaged groups to take part in Outward Bound courses.

The video launch will take place the Glasgow Climbing Centre in Govan where youngsters will make use of the Centre's facilities to demonstrate typical expedition activities.

The Prince will meet some of the young people who have benefited from attending Outward Bound courses, including Tracy Whitelock, a ScottishPower secretary, who featured in the video, and adults with learning difficulties with their carers from Dumbarton Day Centre, Marelen House, Clydebank and the Fred Martin Project in Glasgow.

ScottishPower is sending copies of the video to 5,000 schools in Scotland and to youth clubs and organisations as part of a marketing campaign by the company to promote the work of the Outward Bound Trust.

ScottishPower support for Outward Bound is provided through ScottishPower Learning, which recently took charge of the first of ScottishPower's 250 New Dealers. Since its establishment two years ago, in conjunction with the trade unions, ScottishPower Learning has invested in the development of more than 650 young people, improving the career prospects of the unemployed and special needs groups.

The company has used Outward Bound for the training of around 200 people, including its apprentices, staff and the young unemployed on ScottishPower training programmes.

ScottishPower Learning is unique among Outward Bound sponsors in arranging Outward Bound courses for its own staff together with adults who have learning or physical disabilities. Over the past three years the company has held six courses at Outward Bound's centre at Loch Eil, by Fort William, providing training for around 20 employees and 22 adults with learning disabilities.

Sir Michael Hobbs, the Director of the Outward Bound Trust, thanks the company for its support.

"The far-sighted generosity of ScottishPower has enabled Outward Bound to reach those young people who stand to gain most from its experience.

"Not only has ScottishPower provided funds allowing hundreds of individuals to go on courses, it has also sponsored the magnificent new expedition video".

ScottishPower Chief Executive Ian Robinson said the association with Outward Bound brought together two like-minded organisations committed to the development of its people.

"ScottishPower has grown tremendously over the past few years and we have invested heavily in training to help our staff to take advantage of the opportunities that have arisen.

"Through ScottishPower Learning we are passing on what we've learned to the community, and particularly young people, to help them maximise their potential. I am confident the partnership of two organisations who share the same "can do" culture is providing a very positive and enjoyable experience for all those involved", Mr Robinson added.
