Aberystwth School Signs Ground Breaking Green Energy Deal

30 January 2001

AA school in Aberystwyth has shown its commitment to protecting the environment by signing a deal to use green energy thanks to ScottishPower, parent company of Manweb.

All of the classrooms and buildings at Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddig in Llangawsai, now have their electricity supply matched to small-scale hydro and on-shore wind sources of generation operated by ScottishPower. This is the utility company's first renewable energy contract for a school in Wales.

Coming less than eight weeks after a similar deal was signed with Ceredigion County Council, the move means the region is one of the leading areas in the UK protecting the environment through the use of green energy.

Stewart Saunders, Managing Director of Manweb, said: "ScottishPower is leading the way in helping the region do its bit for the environment and is developing solutions to help the public sector and consumers do their part in increasing generation from renewable sources. Signing these deals shows everyone that green energy is not only a viable option, but a popular one."

In addition to reducing it's supply costs, Ysgol Gyfun Gymunedol Penweddig will also reduce its carbon dioxide emissions from electricity used under this contract by approximately 10 tonnes. Carbon dioxide is the principal cause of global warming.

Arwel George, Headteacher at Penwiddig, said: "We decided to sign the green energy deal partly because of the Climate Change Programme, but also because we believe that the public sector has a role to play in turning the country green. We want to help promote sustainable development, and the best way to educate future generations about the need for green energy is by starting with our own pupils."

The ScottishPower group is committed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions through its existing hydropower and expanding wind farm portfolio.
