Last Village In North Wales Connected To The National Grid Just In Time For Christmas

ScottishPower has recently completed work to connect the village of Abergeirw in Mid Wales to the electricity network for the first time – thought to be the last village in their network area to be fully connected to the National Grid. Work to install 9km of overhead power lines and construct 9 substations began in June 2008 and was completed at the start of December. The village, which consists of 9 properties, will now have a full electricity connection in time for Christmas.

ScottishPower On-Course To Complete Half Of Energy Efficiency Target This Year

ScottishPower has announced that it is on-course to complete almost half (46%) of its Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) programme by the end of December, which means the company will have installed energy efficiency measures equivalent to insulating over 380,000 homes across the UK. CERT - which came into effect on 1 April 2008 and is due to run until 2011 - is an obligation on energy suppliers to achieve targets for promoting reductions in carbon emissions in homes across the UK.

ScottishPower, together with the other five UK major energy suppliers, has agreed to the Government’s plans to increase current investment in the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) by 20% between 2008 and 2011 amounting to an extra investment of £560 million across the industry. ScottishPower will also contribute to the new Community Energy Saving Programme, which is similar to the CERT obligation. This represents an another increase of 12.5 % to the CERT programme which will be split between the other five energy suppliers and the UK’s independent electricity generators – representing a separate rise for the industry of £350 million.

ScottishPower is investing £12 million in a major project to upgrade underground power cables in the Wishaw area. The cables run from the main grid substation at Gowkthrapple to the original Ravenscraig site, where they once provided supplies to the steel works. IBERDROLA RENOVABLES recorded a 2007 net profit of €117.5 million, down 38% on the previous year, and a gross operating profit (EBITDA) of €564 million, a rise of 1.3% on 2006. Revenues rose 37% to €953 million and EBIT declined 7.3% to €347 million. Results were adversely affected by a fall in wholesale prices in Spain and by lower wind power output during the fourth quarter in this country.

IBERDROLA RENOVABLES has signed a contract with Eolica Dobrogea (Schweiz) AG, a company belonging to the Swiss engineering group NEK and the Romanian company Rokura, to acquire a portfolio of approximately 50 wind projects totalling around 1,600 megawatts (MW), located in the Dobrogea region in eastern Romania. The price may be between 200 and 300 million euros, depending on the sites eventually acquired.

Soaring Coal and Gas Costs Force ScottishPower to Announce New Energy Prices

ScottishPower was today forced to follow other energy providers and announce new energy prices for domestic customers as a result of continued increases to input costs, including coal and wholesale gas. By January this year the cost of coal, a key input for ScottishPower, had risen by 97% and wholesale gas prices had risen by 83% compared to February 2007.
