Energy Retail's "Building Leadership Excellence" programme is equipping more than 494 team leaders with skills to help them motivate their teams and help team members understand the business's vision and the part they play in achieving our Big Goals. Willie MacDiarmid (Director, Energy Retail) and his team of directors are backing this programme. It is a key part of enabling people to meet the Energy Retail Big Goals and the five aims of the business strategy:

  • Grow the customer base organically
  • Enhance value of the customer base
  • Exceed customer expectation
  • Achieve operational excellence
  • Develop our employees

Launched in January 2005, the programme consists of eight core learning modules designed to develop team leaders' management skills and capability, enabling them to lead their teams more effectively and drive business performance.

Staff from all departments within the business are included and training is being delivered through a variety of methods including e-learning, on the job activity and self development.

Building Leadership Excellence (BLE) is on course for completion in December 2006 - after more than 6,000 days of training for the staff involved.

"Building Leadership Excellence demonstrates ScottishPower's commitment to staff development...."

Sheila Duncan, Head of Human Resources explained the thinking behind the programme: "Team leaders play a critical role within Energy Retail, focussing on the delivery of great customer service. They need to have the ability and motivation to inspire the hearts and minds of their teams to achieve new performance levels."

Each delegate receives evaluation, feedback and coaching to ensure they are supported and their developmental needs are met throughout the programme.

Gillian Noble, who recently undertook the course commented "BLE has taught me that whilst I can't pre empt every leadership situation I will be faced with I now definitely have the tools to assist me in managing my team effectively and with confidence."

Another staff member to benefit from the BLE, Linda Devine said 'Being a relatively new employee, the BLE courses have been useful in making me aware of the wide scope of our

business and identifying the different elements of people and process management. I now realise that to obtain the best performance from my team I have to understand their individual motivations and strengths. By providing these courses ScottishPower demonstrates its commitment to team leaders, giving us the tools we need to fulfil our current roles and enabling us to develop as business leaders of the future."
